Helping Children Prepare to Return Back to School: A Mental Health Guide for Parents

As the summer break winds down, many parents are focused on preparing children to return back to school a transition that can stir a mix of excitement, stress, and anxiety in both kids and caregivers. Mental health professionals recognize that this period can significantly impact a child’s emotional well-being, especially when routines have shifted or if a child has experienced challenges during the previous school year.

Here are evidence-based strategies to support a smooth and emotionally healthy return:

1. Start Rebuilding Routines Early

Children thrive on routine. Begin adjusting sleep and meal schedules at least two weeks before school starts. This helps their bodies and minds adapt slowly, making the first day of school less of a shock.

2. Talk About Expectations and Emotions

Engage in open conversations about what school will look like. Ask your child how they feel about returning excited, nervous, scared and validate their feelings. You can say things like, “It makes sense to feel nervous about a new teacher. I’m here for you.”

3. Reconnect With the School Environment

Take a walk around the school, meet the teacher if possible, or schedule a tour. Familiarity helps reduce anxiety, especially for children starting at a new school or transitioning to a higher grade.

4. Create a Calm-Down Kit

Prepare a small kit for your child with tools to manage stress, such as stress balls, affirmations, or comforting photos. Teach them how and when to use these items if they feel overwhelmed.

5. Stay Involved and Observant

Once school begins, check in with your child daily. Notice changes in mood, appetite, or sleep. These may signal deeper concerns. If necessary, connect with a school counselor or a mental health clinic for additional support.

Preparing children to return back to school is not just about backpacks and supplies—it’s about creating emotional readiness. With proactive support, children can enter the school year with resilience and confidence.
